Shortly before the Second world war 'Roland was requisitioned by the Navy and converted into a minelayer (Minenschiff), August 24, 1939 ship commissioned krigsmarine under the command of fregattenkapitana stock Karl-Friedrich Bril. Roland actively participated in the formulation of the minefields in the waters of the Baltic and North seas (one of the probable reasons of destruction of the Soviet submarine S-403 from the Northern fleet is considered to be the undermining of a mine installed Roland). The last operation for 'Roland was the strengthening of minefields Seeigel 7b and Seeigel 7b/2 in the Gulf of Finland in April 1944, April 22, 1944 in the Bay of Narva Roland was blown up by a German mine and rapidly sank, along with the ship were killed 235 members of the crew.
